Please join your fellow (39!) team-mates this coming Thursday night as we enter our Blitz Campaign to hit our goal of member Equity Share and Loan Pledges by February 14th.

The Website is up-and-running, Pledges are coming in, but we’ve not yet expanded our marketing reach as far as we plan to go.  Your ideas, your energy and your assistance is still needed, and so we really, really want to see you at 5:30pm next Thursday, January 3rd at City Hall, first floor Conference Room #12!

Co-op Planning Meeting – Wednesday, March 13 @ Burlington Co-Housing

Join us at Burlington Co-Housing on Wednesday, March 13 at 5:30pm.

The time has come to draw up incorporation papers, draft by-laws, initial budget and time frame to start up the actual cooperative.

Tentatively we are thinking about April 6th as a general membership meeting date for amending and approving the by-laws and beginning the election of our Board of Directors.

We want to run these ideas by you and anyone else who wishes to join us on Wednesday, March 13 . Hopefully you will modify our plans and give approval to go ahead with them.

Please spread the word far and wide.

Vermont Co-op Happy Hour @ 3 Needs, Frank Lloyd Wright Room

Inspired by the Philadelphia Area Cooperative Alliance’s successful recent event of a similar nature, join your fellow Vermont cooperators for a cold beverage and conversations about strengthening our cooperative economy! Co-op staff, volunteers, and interested members are welcome, and the evening will feature a short update from a Vermont cooperator (TBD) at 6:15, as well as co-op board games for those interested. Keep BT Local will have a table set up to answer any questions and hand out stickers. Swing by and check it out; if this event goes well, we might try to make this a regular thing! RSVP on Facebook.

SHIFT CHANGE is a documentary film by veteran award-winning filmmakers Melissa Young and Mark Dworkin. It tells the little known stories of employee owned businesses that compete successfully in today’s economy while providing secure, dignified jobs in democratic workplaces.

With the long decline in US manufacturing and today’s economic crisis, millions have been thrown out of work, and many are losing their homes. The usual economic solutions are not working, so some citizens and public officials are ready to think outside of the box, to reinvent our failing economy in order to restore long term community stability and a more egalitarian way of life.

There is growing interest in firms that are owned and managed by their workers. Such firms tend to be more profitable and innovative, and more committed to the communities where they are based. Owning Our Future – Marjorie Kelly @ Peace and Justice Center

The KBTL Board is pleased to announce that today, Thursday, June 1, at 4:30 PM, acclaimed author and researcher, Marjorie Kelly, will speak on the benefits and practicality of local ownership, at the Peace and Justice Center, 60 Lake St., in Burlington. This event is free and open to the public.

Ms. Kelly is in town to deliver the Keynote at the 2017 Vermont Employee Ownership Center 2017 Conference on Friday, June 2 at the UVM Davis Center (registration required).

Marjorie Kelly was co-founder and for 20 years president of Business Ethics magazine, known for its annual ranking of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens. She served as director or advisory board member for Willy Street Co-op, the Center for Corporate Governance and Accountability at George Washington University Law School, the Strategic Corporate Initiative, and other projects. Currently, she serves on the National Board of Advisors for CUNY School of Law’s Community Economic Development Clinic.

She is the author of “Owning Our Future: The Emerging Ownership Revolution” (2012), about which Bill McKibbin said, “This magnificent book is a kind of recipe for how civilization might cope with its too-big-to-fail problem…”, and Jeffrey Hollender, cofounder and former CEO, Seventh Generation said “…The future belongs to the alternative forms of ownership Kelly writes about. This is a book the world desperately needs.”,

Her previous book, The Divine Right of Capital, was named one of Library Journal’s 10 Best Business Books of 2001. Kelly’s writings and op-eds have appeared in many publications, including Harvard Business Review, New England Law Review, Chief Executive, Boston Globe, Yes! Magazine and San Francisco Chronicle.

Alternative Models for Businesses “Teach-In” @ Burlington City Arts Center

There will be an Alternative Models for Businesses “Teach-In” 7 PM, June 19 at Burlington City Arts, 2nd Floor. Featuring Roberta MacDonald, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Cabot Creamery Cooperative and Kenneth Merritt, who led the drafting of the Vermont Benefit Corporation (“B Corp”) legislation. This event is sponsored by City Council President, Jane Knodell.

Why? Because Burlington Telecom is about to be sold. The question is, to whom — A typical corporation or someone else? The purpose of this event is to inform City councilors, BTAB (Burlington Telecom Advisory Board), and the general public about the benefits and costs of alternatives to the typical corporate model.

Refreshments will be served.

Please come to this event to learn more about these alternatives and to show your support for cooperative ownership of BT.

House Party, Tuesday, August 8th – Learn about the Sale of Burlington Telecom @ Burlington Co-Housing East Village

Burlington Cohousing (East Village Drive off East Avenue) is hosting a House Party to educate ourselves about the current status of the bids for Burlington Telecom and the decision process involved. We invited our two City Councilors Sharon Bushor and Richard Deane to attend but they cannot due to the confidentiality of the process. Board Members from Keep BT Local Cooperative will be there to present the details about their bid and the financing for it. We hope other bidders will also come and present details of their proposals. The Police have given us permission for folks coming to this event to park on East Avenue. There will be refreshments. Hope to see you there. It promises to be a very lively discussion.
